"The Morning After: Prescription-Free Access to Emergency Contraceptive Pills" (joint with Mirjam Reutter)

About the event
We provide a Europe-wide analysis of sales and health impacts caused by the prescription-free availability of the so-called morning-after pill, an oral emergency contraceptive aiming to prevent unintended pregnancy up to five days after unprotected sex. Exploiting country-year variation while accounting for the clustered data structure by Randomization Inference, we measure a sharp increase in sales (65%) and manufacturers’ revenue (105%). While we find no effects on abortions and risky sexual behavior, we detect a slight increase in fertility of 3%.
