Despite being almost 50% more expensive as a planned vaginal birth, the incidence of caesarean section (CS) births in the UK has grown from around 10% to 25% of all births over the last 20 years. Popular media see a role for immigrants in this and associated increased pressure on publicly provided services. We first present a model of planned and emergency CS that has a role for shift factors which could include immigration status of both patient and clinicians. We then look to establish whether there is any evidence of a causal link between rising immigration and rising incidence of Caesarean Section.
